Postgraduate Certificate in Educational Studies (PGCE)

We are pleased to be working with Nottingham University who will provide the PGCE element of our qualification, alongside our award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

The PGCE element will be taught in Devon by University experts.

Course Structure

  • 60 Masters Credits, each assignment, worth 20 M-Level credits
  • Three-modules with assignments, supported by over 10 days of university-led teaching and independent study time
  • Sessions delivered using a blended approach, both in person (within area) and online
  • Reading lists cover general education texts for both primary and secondary; there are separate reading lists for secondary school subjects.
  • Carefully integrated into our teacher training programme to sequence your learning and support your workload
  • Example modules and assignments shown below (these may be subject to change)
  • ​Module 1: Understanding Contexts (classrooms, schools, school systems including international comparisons)
  • Assignment 1 – a 4000-word written assignment exploring the place and purpose of students’ phase or subject, including current debates/issues

  • Module 2: Understanding Learning & Teaching (including foundation theories; emerging theories; theories of assessment)
  • Assignment 2 – 15-minute presentation to peers supported by 600-word reflective writing and annotated reference list. The presentation asks students to demonstrate how a sequence of lessons they have taught (or planned) is informed by a relevant theory of learning.

  • Module 3: Inquiring into Educational Experience (including Masters-level research methods and ethics; Science of Learning; School Leadership)
  • Assignment 3 – a 4000-word practice-based inquiry asking the students to carry out a piece of small-scale research in the context of their teaching. This includes gaining ethical approval from the university.
