Course Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent with a 2:2 or above (predicted if you are in the final year of your course)
  • If you need to improve your subject knowledge, you may be asked to complete a subject knowledge enhancement (SKE) course.
  • You’ll need to have studied your subject to at least A Level, and preferably have a related degree with 50% of the content in the subject you’re planning to teach. (Exceptions will be considered on a case-by-case basis).
  • GCSE Grade 4 (C) or above in Maths and English Language or Literature, or an equivalent qualification.
  • If you wish to teach primary, you will also need a GCSE at Grade 4 (C) or above in Science.
  • We will consider candidates with pending GCSEs.
  • We will consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English or Maths.
  • If you are required to complete an equivalent GCSE, you will be responsible for meeting the cost. We recommend: A star equivalency (preferred) - Equivalencytesting.com. You need to have completed these equivalency examinations and have the results prior to the start of the course. The minimum grade is equivalent to a Grade 4.

If you do not meet these requirements, please contact us to discuss your options.

How to Apply

All teacher training courses are applied for via the Department for Education’s ‘Apply for Teacher Training’ portal. Applications for the academic year 2026 - 2027 are now open.
Your Personal Statement - Top Tips
  • Both written and verbal communication are key skills of teaching, your personal statement is an opportunity to show your written skills.
  • Make sure you ask someone to proof read your personal statement, offer additional ideas and check for spelling and grammar.
  • Think about why you want to teach before you start your statement and try and make your answer personal to you. You can include interest in the subject / making a difference / working with children, but also add that special something to make you stand out. For example, to see more women teaching sciences, become a role model for young people.

References
You will need to add two references to your application.
However, referees are only contacted once you accept an offer from a Provider.
Try to include recent employment / University referees as they will know you well, and use their professional, rather than personal email address.
Applications for September 2026 entry are now open.
